Turmeric Part 3

Part 3, the final part of Turmeric. A full reference list is at the end.

Turmeric is non-toxic up to levels of 12g/day for humans due to poor bio availability. Ayurvedic medicine consider Turmeric as a blood stimulator and should be avoided in pregnancy. In cases of bile duct obstruction, turmeric is contraindicated.

Turmeric is readily available in Australia and can be bought in powder form in most supermarkets. As turmeric is prominent in Indian cooking, buying powdered turmeric from an Asian supermarket where product turnover is high, usually provides a fresher batch. If buying a fresh root of turmeric (available in the vegetable section of some supermarkets and some farmer’s markets), look for a firm, fresh and plump looking product and store in an open container, using within two weeks.

Due to the diversity of its healing properties, the main component of turmeric, curcumin, could be renamed “cure-cumin”. As turmeric has so many therapeutic benefits and is generally safe to use, consuming and enjoying this spice on a daily basis is recommended for health and wellbeing.
