Waiting for the Moment to Arrive

I came across a wonderful quotation the other week by Marcel Proust, a French novelist from the 20th century:

“My destination is no longer a place, rather a new way of seeing.”

It made me think what does “destination” mean to me?  I think, in general, we spend too long waiting to arrive at our ideal place.  In a world where goals and to focus on “bettering ourselves” are encouraged in a well-meaning manner, it is easy to forget about what we have achieved already.

A well-balanced life includes a variety of life choices.  Balancing our work and personal life, spending time equally between goals and relaxation, being alone reflecting and dividing our time with the people we care about.. the list is endless. When we are working on our “stuff” and digging deeper into what we want to achieve, sometimes the end destination is the only focus we look towards.  It’s exciting and challenging.  I get it.  However, stopping and grounding and appreciating what we already have can be hugely beneficial too.  When we stop and appreciate how far we have come already, motivation builds and spills.

For me, a destination is a fluid transient moment.   “A new way of seeing” works perfectly for me.  I no longer look, I see.  I am not searching continuously, I gratefully absorb what is in my life, all the opportunities available to me and remember how far I have come.  That, in turn, brings me to happiness, renewed motivation and gratitude.   I am truly thankful
