Listening to Learn or Hearing to Speak

I want you to imagine you are out with a close friend.  They are talking to you about a subject that is close to your heart.  You have studied, enjoyed and are very knowledgeable about the topic.  How do you react?

Do you listen intently to learn more or are you hearing what is said in order to start speaking?

Which category do you fit into?  Come on, be honest with yourself here (and I know sometimes tough love is a rough ride), but where do you fit in?

It is easy to fall into a “I know that already” stance.  It’s also easy to fall into the “wait for a gap so I can respond” conversation too.  Especially when it is a subject matter that gets you excitable and interested.

But this can also set up self-limiting boundaries.  When you Hear to Speak, you stop learning.  Your friend might have something to say that you have not even considered.  Or.  Even Worse.  They are challenging your approach on the subject inadvertently.

My suggestion to you would be this.  Stop.  Listen.

Then continue listening even more.

Judgement can come out of nowhere.  We are so intent on having our say, we forget that once upon a time we didn’t know what we know now and had to learn it in the first place.  And we really shouldn’t be limiting that knowledge.

Listen to Learn and then it becomes listening to Unlearn.

Change your Hear to Speak stance to Speak to Hear More.

Lessons come in many guises.  Listen more and understanding grows.
